Student Run Agencies

Typical Week

Typical Week

The best thing about agency life is that it’s rarely routine. There’s no way to predict what will happen on a weekly—or even a daily—basis. But don’t worry, the purpose of a student-run agency is to help you get comfortable, so it’s likely that your faculty advisors or student leadership have a process in place.

You can certainly expect dedicated time during the week to meet as a full agency. Updates at this meeting could focus on each department or each client. In any case, staff members should receive the opportunity to learn more about what’s going on outside of their specific projects.

There is also usually a dedicated time during the week for departments to meet and discuss their client work. This gives individual staff members a chance to bounce ideas off the rest of their department and crowdsource solutions to problems that come up.

Client teams usually meet on a more free-flowing schedule. An account manager—or client—might bring together representatives from each department for a check in and discussion of the work. Some projects might benefit from everyone being in the room at the same time instead of working on their own.

Finally, after all that time discussing the work, you’re going to have to carve out time to actually get it done. The amount of work you do on an individual basis is also going to vary widely. You should always speak up if your workload is making it difficult for you to handle your other commitments, but you shouldn’t be surprised if your agency work is more time-consuming than your classes or part-time job. This is what you signed up for!
